Be sure to read the 7 repotting tips below!

Pretty in Pink

You can call them Chinese evergreen and nerve plants, but it’s more fun to pronounce their true names: ag-lah-neem-a and fi-toh-nee-a. Cheerful reddish-pink and green leaves of red aglaonema grow best in medium or indirect light. In direct sunlight, shade the plant with a sheer curtain. It can withstand a little watering neglect and needs no pruning. For a stylish look, pair it with a fittonia that sports bright pink, red or white veins. Fittonia needs the same light levels but wants soil that is kept lightly moist. Tie these rose-touched plants together in a trendy group using containers of similar colors but mismatched styles.

Ready Freddie

Looking for a handsome guy who is well-behaved and easy on the eyes? ‘Freddie’ is a calathea cultivar whose light green leaves have dark green chevron veins. He comes from a large family, so seek out other calatheas if you’re looking for houseplants that grow almost anywhere in medium to low light and slightly moist soil. It’s better to keep soil a little dry than too wet.

Tamed Tropics

Grow a well-behaved jungle in your living room by grouping plants with varying leaf shapes and sizes. The mass cane or corn plant (Dracaena fragrans ‘Massangeana’) reaches new heights in a stately container with a ruffle of silvery satin pothos (Epipremnum pictum ‘Argyraeum’) at its base. A green-leaf aglaonema and a spiky-leaf variegated spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) pair nicely in coordinated pots. All thrive in almost any kind of light except direct sunlight. Wait until the soil dries out before watering again. Fertilize only once or twice a year, preferably in spring or summer. If you see brown tips on leaves, you may be overfertilizing.

Mystery Lady

Enhance a tall, narrow corner in a humid, sunlit bathroom with an African mask (Alocasia ‘Polly’). Its glossy, white-veined green leaves also resemble a shield or a horse’s face. She makes you think—as Dorothy did in Oz—that you’re not in Kansas anymore. A member of the elephant ear family, African mask likes bright but indirect sunlight and lightly moist soil.
